Okinawa
Children's Parks &
Playgrounds Parks & Playgrounds are HUGE in Okinawa - popular,
plentiful, unique, and FUN! You have not seen
slides, jungle gyms, or play areas like this - and for
FREE! Seriously, you have got to check these out.
Why in the world do they have so many parks?
Great question. Most likely this stems from the
fact that Okinawan homes do not traditionally have large
yards or grassy play areas. This - and the reality
of the destructive power of typhoons - means that their
parks are larger and very heavy duty.
Forewarning on rollerslides - if you try one of these
(they are quite fun), be
sure to bring a large piece of cardboard. . .the slide
is faster this way. If you forget it, you will get
a nice (rug burn like) surprise on your bum.
Don't see your favorite
park here? Heard of an even better one?

Yu Kids Island? Scandia?
-
Great humid or rainy weather
option for the kiddos to let off some energy!!!
- Is that the real name?
Frankly, we don't really know the correct
name for this place. But it is in a black
building with a sphinx outside (see picture to the
left). Odd, but a good landmark.
- Distance from Foster/Kadena
- 30 / 15 mins.
- What is it? A
3-story family fun building
- 1st floor: check-in
area, food, billiards (pool tables)
- 2nd floor: like Mona-Kids
jungle - an indoor, air-conditioned
(though not ice cold by any means) padded play area with a ball pit,
tunnels, play structures for the little ones with an
arcade (video games, ping-pong, foosball, air
hockey, all included with admissions price)
- 3rd floor: outdoor
covered play area (though still hot in summer
obviously), and batting cages
- What does it cost?
A bit complex :-(. Check-in at the desk on
level above parking - no guarantees on English being
spoken. Initial (one-time only) membership fee
of 315yen (they'll have you sign a membership card).
Then a fee per time limit, with several payment
options depending on how long you plan on staying:
105yen per 15 minutes, 1000yen for unlimited Mon-Fri
(11-8), 1500 yen unlimited Mon-Fri (5pm-closing).
Weekends - 1000yen for 3 hours.
- What ages do they
charge? Not sure. We did not get
charged for a 2 or a 4 year old, only for the
adults.
- Downsides?
No guarantees on music playing over their sound
system (may be more adult in nature). Not much
English spoken.
- Hours? 11AM-2AM
(weekdays); 10AM-2AM (weekends) .
